Companies that fail to surrender the required allowances are subject to an excess emissions penalty of €100 per tonne of CO2. Additionally, they remain obligated to surrender the outstanding allowances.
Persistent non-compliance over two or more consecutive periods may lead to the banning of the company’s ships from trading within the EU.
